Are Justin and Selena the New Justin and Britney?
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are Hollywood’s youngest power couple. Women of all ages are mesmerized by Bieber, preteen girls spend their birthday money to scream at his concerts, grown women want to know his secret to achieving such flawless skin.
But back in my day, there was a different royal teen couple that made headlines and that couple was Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
Britney and Justin dated for three years starting in 1999 when they were both 18. Britney had just released her second album and Justin was riding the fame of boy band N’Sync.
Britney hadn’t gone crazy yet and Justin still had those weird blonde jheri curls. If we’re talking teenagers who have too much fame and fortune, Justin/Britney circa the year 2000 and Justin/Selena circa right now are essentially the same thing.
So who would win in a battle of teen royal couples? It’s Justin and Selena vs. Justin and Britney.
When B. Spears and JT were dating, Britney released her “Oops I Did It Again” album, or as I like to call it, the beginning of Britney’s midriff-exposing slut phase. At the same age, Selena Gomez is making music about feeling beautiful and being perfect? Eh. In terms of inappropriate levels of sexiness, Team JT and B. Spears win.
How could anyone forget the matching denim outfits that Britney and Justin wore together to the 2001 American Music Awards. So far, Selena and Justin haven’t worn anything embarrassing yet. Although Justin Bieber and Emma Watson have the same haircut, the style award goes to Selena and Justin.
In 2002 Matt Damon appeared on SNL to spoof the alleged “dance off” that took place between recently broken up Britney and Justin at a Hollywood club. Damon and Amy Poehler did their best impressions of the former power couple recreating some of their famous dance moves. In 2011, Miley Cryus went on SNL dressed as Justin Bieber. She donned the singers famous purple hoodie, grabbed her crotched and batted her eyelashes in Bieber’s famous faux gangster fashion. Who had the best slam on SNL? Britney and Justin FTW, only because I like dance-offs and I don’t like Miley Cyrus.
Both teen couples started out with innocent beginnings. Spears and Timberlake both started their careers on the Mickey Mouse Club. Justin then joined a boy band and Britney’s music videos used to take place in highschool gyms. Bieber is still a fetus essentially and hails from Canada and Selena got her start working on children’s show, Barney. Well, we all know how Britney turned out, so Selena and Justin win the innocent award!
Justin and Selena can enjoy their reign as the teenage dream team, for now. But for the rest of us “of age” readers, Justin and Britney will always be our King and Queen.
